Central Mail Service: Changing Your Password
Email messages on the Central Mail Service (CMS) can be read with Mulberry,
Eudora, Netscape, Pine or other email client.
Changing Your Password via the World Wide Web
If you have access to the World Wide Web, the simplest way to change
your Central Mail Service (CMS) password is to:
- start your web browser
- visit the WebMail site
- login with your CMS information (U.Va. Computing ID - example: mst3k
and your email Password)
- Click on the Settings tab
- Click on the Password link on the left
and follow the instructions.
Should you need assistance with selecting a new password, please see
Helpful Hints for Selecting a Password later
in this information. Complete the form provided, submit it and your password
will be changed if all information is specified correctly.
Changing Your Password without using the World Wide Web
If you do not have a web browser or do not have access to the internet,
you can change your CMS password using a non-web interface. You will have
to use a secure telnet program to make the change. Secure telnet is available
on a variety of computers and operating systems, so how you access it
will vary depending on the type of computer you are using. Information
on the secure telnet clients that are available to members of the U.Va.
community can be found at the web site at: http://www.itc.virginia.edu/desktop/security/clients.html
After you have installed the secure telnet client and established a
connection to config.mail.virginia.edu, you should then receive a login
prompt for the Central Mail Service. Proceed to step 1 of Creating
a New Password .
If you do not receive a login prompt for CMS, you will need to contact
the ITC Help Desk at (434) 924-3731 or send email to consult@Virginia.edu
and ask for assistance with locating and installing a secure telnet program
for your computer system. You will need to tell the consultant what type
of computer system you have so that they can help you find the right secure
telnet client for it. You cannot proceed until you have this application
on your system.
Creating a New Password
- After successfully completing the steps to connect
via a secure telnet session to config.mail.virginia.edu, you should
receive a prompt to login. Type your UVa computing ID (example:
mst3k) at the login prompt and press the Enter
(or Return) key.
- Type your current CMS password and press Enter (Return).
- You will see the Mail Configuration Options menu.
- Use the down arrow on your keyboard to move the menu's pointer to
the Change password selection or, press the number corresponding
to the selection and press Enter (Return).
- Press Enter (Return) to select Change password.
- You will prompted to type your old password. (This prompt is asking
for the password you used when you first logged in to this account.)
Type your old password and press Enter (Return).
Note: if you mistype your password, you will see sorry. Press
Enter (Return) to continue. At this point, go to step where you are
asked to enter your old password and try again.
- You will be prompted to type a new password. Remember to make the
password something that is not obvious, but that you will be able to
remember. For hints on creating a password, see Helpful
Hints for Selecting a Password. Type a new password and press
Enter (Return).
- You will be prompted to re-type the new password. If what you type
does not match what you typed as the first new password, you will be
prompted to try again.
- When you have successfully changed your password, you will be returned
to the main Mail Configuration Options menu. Press x
and then Enter (Return) to exit.
- If the window in which you have been working does not close automatically,
click on File on the menu bar and then click Exit (Close).
Helpful Hints for Selecting a Password
For UVa to maintain computer security, stringent password rules are
necessary. The password must:
- contain 7 or 8 characters
- not be or contain a word
- not be or contain your name or userid
- contain at least four unique characters
- contain characters from three of the following categories:
- Uppercase letters (A-Z)
- Lowercase letters (a-z)
- Numeric characters (0-9)
- Nonalphanumeric characters (eg. ! @ # $ %)
You can mix UPPER and lower case letters, but the letters must not
spell a word in any language.
Note: Upper and lower case letters are distinct within passwords.
Example:
- Select a sentence or phrase that has meaning to you, and create a password
based on the first letters of each word, adding punctuation marks and special characters. "is at the center of life's meaning."
Password: iAt+coLm
