Configure Eudora 6.2
MAC OSX

Eudora 6.2 configuration instructions including Central Mail Service (CMS) and blue.unix email account setup, directory services setup, and payment mode selection. These instructions are for computers running MAC OSX. Examples are provided to assist with the configuration.
  • Install Eudora 6.2.
  • Print this document for reference during software configuration.
  • To use Eudora, you will need to be connected to the UVa network or connected to the Internet using an Internet Service Provider (ISP) account.
  • You must have an account on the UVa Central Mail Service or some other email server, such as the Unix Cluster (blue.unix.virginia.edu). To create a Central Mail Service email account or other UVa accounts, visit http://www.itc.virginia.edu/accounts.

Central Mail Service Email Account Setup

  1. Launch (run) the Eudora program by clicking the Eudora program icon in the Eudora Application Folder.

  2. The application will start and the Eudora splash screen will appear.

  3. Continue through prompt to migrate settings from a previously installed email client by clicking No as we will configure Eudora in the following steps.

  4. Gather the required account information.
    To determine your CMS configuration, access: http://config.mail.virginia.edu
    (log in using your UVA Computing ID and password). Click on the link "Configuration Information for IMAP programs other than Mulberry" and note the Mail Server, Login Name, and SMTP Server information.

    The information below consists of sample values for filling in required fields while configuring Eudora. Note that the CMS SMTP Server name begins with the first letter of your first name followed by a period. When configuring Eudora, be sure to use values that are true for you.
    Sample Field Values for UVa Central Mail Service (CMS) Account:

    User Name: mst3k
    Mail Server: m.mail.virginia.edu
    Real Name: M.S. Theatre

  5. From the Eudora drop-down menu, select Preferences.

  6. Under the Category column on the left side of the window, click the Getting Started icon. On the right half of the window, enter your values into the User Name, Mail Server, and Real Name fields.

  7. Under the Category column on the left side of the Settings window. Select the Checking Mail icon. Select the Check for mail every checkbox and enter 10 in the Check for mail every...minutes field. Select IMAP. The use of POP is discouraged (You may wish to read about POP and IMAP).

  8. Save your changes by clicking OK. When you access your email for the first time, Eudora will prompt you to enter your password; enter your password and click OK.

  9. If you receive a prompt to automatically expunge messages click YES if you want Eudora to expunge your deleted messages for your or click NO if you want to expunge them manually.

  10. You may receive a prompt confirming use of the "Junk" folder. Select OK or select CANCEL and choose the folder you want to use as your Junk Mailbox. Eudora prompt to choose Junk folder
  11. If configured correctly, you should be able to open your inbox. You have finished setting up Eudora to access your CMS account. Now proceed to Configure Directory Services.

Blue.Unix Email Account Setup

  1. Gather the required account information.
    The information below consists of sample values for filling in required fields while configuring Eudora.
    Sample Field Values for UVa UNIX Cluster (blue.unix) Account:

    User Name: mst3k
    Mail Server: unix.mail.virginia.edu
    Real Name: M.S. Theatre
    SMTP Server:
    smtp.mail.virginia.edu

  2. From the Eudora drop-down menu, choose Preferences...

  3. A Settings window appears; under the Category column on the left side of the window, click the Getting Started icon. On the right half of the window, enter your values into the User Name, Mail Server, Real Name, and SMTP Server fields.

  4. Under the Category column on the left side of the Options window, click Checking Mail. Select IMAP. The use of POP is discouraged (You may wish to read about POP and IMAP). Select the Check for mail every checkbox and enter 10 in the Check for mail every...minutes field. In the IMAP Mailbox Location Prefix field, type ~/Mail (a tilde followed by a forward-slash and the word Mail).

  5. Under the Category column on the left side of the Options window, click Sending Mail. Settings made in previous screens should be carried forward to this screen.

  6. Click OK to save your changes. You have finished setting up Eudora to access your Blue.Unix account.

Configure Directory Services for UVa

Setting up Directory Services will help you find email addresses and other contact information by searching the UVa database of students, faculty and staff from within Eudora.

  1. From the Eudora menu, choose Preferences...

  2. Under the Category column on the left side of the Options window, scroll down to and click LDAP.

  3. Under the Directory Services Host, enter the text:
    ldap://ldap.virginia.edu/o=university of virginia,c=us
    and check the "Live" directory services queries box. Save your changes by clicking OK.

Choose Eudora Mode

  1. Decide which version of Eudora is right for you (Light, Sponsored or Paid).
    • Light is absent some features
    • Sponsored is full-featured, but displays advertisements
    • Paid costs money, but is full-featured and displays no advertisements.
  2. From the Help drop-down menu, click Payment & Registration.

  3. Choose the Eudora mode you wish to use or click the Tell Me More... button to learn about how the modes differ.

  4. Click Close to save your changes.

Test your Eudora Setup

Test the configuration by sending yourself an email message.

  1. Start Eudora by clicking the Eudora Icon in the Eudora Application Folder. From the Eudora Message drop-down menu, select New Message.

  2. Enter your own email address in the To: field and some text in the Subject: field and message area, then click the Send button.

  3. Wait 5 minutes to give the mail a chance to be delivered, then click Check Mail on the Eudora icon bar to read your test message.

  4. Enter your password if prompted and click OK.

  5. A window may appear stating new mail has arrived, click OK.

  6. Your test email should appear in your inbox. If you do not receive the message after 15 minutes, please recheck your Eudora configuration while reviewing this document.
